I’ve written so much about large cast iron collector’s auctions; shown you my mistakes so you can learn from them, and given you a bunch of tips and considerations for the auction. The auctions are super fun, but it’s easy to get carried away and spend more than you planned. You need to be prepared, or you can find yourself paying far more than you intended. Great for the seller, but not so much for you, the buyer!
I made a video of the beginning of a live and online large cast iron collector’s auction on August 23, 2025. Follow along as I prepare for, watch, and bid online on an Iron Mountain (by Griswold) cast-iron skillet lid. The video will be helpful to you if you have never bid on an online auction that is running simultaneously with an in-person auction.
In the video, I discuss what steps I take and what considerations I keep in mind during cast iron auctions, including the buyer’s premiums and shipping charges. You will hear my thought process as I follow along with the auction. You will see several other items auctioned, and the prices they brought. Finally, you will see me bid on a vintage Iron Mountain (by Griswold) cast-iron skillet lid. I didn’t win, darn it!
This auction ran live and online. Bidders were onsite bidding, and others (including me) were watching and bidding online. The video is long (18 minutes plus), but it provides a good overview of the process.
If you are new or new-ish to live and online auctions, you may find the video helpful as you navigate the process!
