Ask Mary: Can you identify the maker of this large gem pan?

Update: Facebook reader Michael Cumminskey identified your pan, Steve. It is a “Takoyaki” pan. Do a little google search and you’ll learn all about it.

Steve Z. of Newell New Jersey wrote to me via the contact form and said:

I picked up a large round Gem pan with 28 spots for muffins. The only marking is a rooster or chicken and the number 28 opposite. I can’t look it up because all I come up with are cast iron roosters! It’s about 16 inches handle to handle. Any ideas? Thanks.

Steve sent along these photos:

Takoyaki cást iron rooster pan.
Mystery pan submitted by reader. 28 egg cups. Takoyaki pan.

Steve, I don’t recognize this pan. My guess (and it is just that – a guess) is that it is not vintage. I also question whether it is American-made. I do not have any expertise in other than American-made cast iron.

I did a google images search, and like you, I did not come up with a match.

So readers, can any of you help us to identify Steve’s pan?
